The Vintage V100 is a solid Mahogany bodied electric guitar, based on a classic design with quality attributes including a set Mahogany neck, dual covered humbuckers and separate volume and tone controls for each. The V100 has seriously good looks and a well-detailed finish including cream body and neck binding in addition to a flamed maple top on certain models.
The most notable design feature of the V100 is that the Mahogany neck is set into the body (as opposed to a bolt on neck), making it a very genuine instrument to hear and play. The combination of this neck joint and the Mahogany body has long been used for top quality electric guitars that tend to fetch quite a price! From a distance the V100 would be indistinguishable from other guitars worth 5 times as much! Even with a closer inspection you’d have to be nit picking to put it down.
There is a glamorous range of colours and finishes to choose from; the Tobacco Sunburst and Wine Red models have gold hardware and a translucent finish that helps bring out the wood grain beneath. The Gloss Black version is also complemented with gold hardware, having a solid coloured finish. The stunning Cherry Sunburst V100 has a flame Maple finish and chrome hardware.
The block shaped symmetrical headstock is adorned with Kluson style tuners bearing green plastic tulip knobs in the classic 3-a-side formation. At its tip the Vintage logo is inlaid in pearloid in addition to a pearloid emblem. Trapezoid position inlays down the fretboard contribute to the V100’s classic styling. The neck feels sturdy and smooth with its gloss lacquer running up around the cream fingerboard binding, concealing the fret ends. The darkened Rosewood fretboard has a nice feel to it and plays equally well right down the neck.
The Vintage V100 makes full use of its single cutaway body shape, offering a generous portion of the upper frets in easy reach. On the upper shoulder of the body is the pickup selector switch with has three positions from rhythm to treble and both together. In addition to the metalwork there are also cream plastic fittings including pickup surrounds, pickup selector backplate and raised pickguard. The volume and tone controls are of the golden resin Speed variety, with white numbering.
The V100 is equipped with Wilkinson hardware including the deluxe tuners and dual covered humbuckers. In combination with the separate volume and tone controls there is a powerful sound to be harnessed and a lot of scope for tone shaping. Both rhythm and treble humbuckers are powerful and successfully deliver a thick tone. Used together they have a full-bodied sound that works great with clean and distorted amp settings alike. Separately the treble humbucker will cut through with precision and there’s enough bluesy colour to the neck pickup to keep those solos sounding full of life.
Although the V100 obviously gets its inspiration from a Les Paul, it does a great job and delivers all of the style and playability that makes good guitars so much fun to play. If you’ve got your eye on this style of electric guitar then the V100 beats the competition at the sub £200 mark and even £300 guitars won’t offer much more in the way of build, components and style.
