A top quality Les Paul Custom for under £350!
Beautiful to look at and a dream to play, Tokai's ALC53 is a modern classic with gold hardware, a Flamed Maple top, great pickups and loads of vibe, all at no extra cost.
The Headstock is gloss black to the front, with 5 ply white and black binding and a small black plastic truss rod cover. Tokai's logo and the attractive crown motif are inlaid in white Abolone, with hints of sparkling green and purple.
The rear of the headstock is naturally coloured, with a gloss finish and the 6 digit serial number. 2 rows of gold Vintage style machine heads provide the tuning stability you'd expect on this guitar.
The Maple neck feels very slim, a shallow D profile, really designed to be played quickly. The Rosewood fingerboard if fully bound up both edges in bright white plastic, and large White Abolone block markers mark the usual positions, and being a Custom, they start at the first fret.
Nut width here is 42mm, with action at the 12th fret between 2-3mm across the board.
The neck joins the body at the 16th fret on the bass side, and 19th on the treble side, so no upper access problems, as you'd expect.
The body is fully bound on the front and back in 5 ply black and white. The back of the guitar is flat, with a natural finish, again showing off the nicely grained wood.
The arched top of the ALC53 has a lovely Flame Maple finish, with a subtle grain going from side to side.
Here, we have a contrasting black, 3 ply scratchplate, 2 gold Vintage PAF Mk4 humbuckers with black surrounds, 4 black speed knobs for the volume and tone controls, gold tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece, and a vintage style orange pickup selector switch.
Sounds, a really good rock guitar, on the drive channel, both pickups perform excellently, loads of sustain, grunt, howl and clarity.
On clean duties, it performs admirably as well, the bridge pickup is bright and cheerful, great for blues, rock 'n' roll and jazz, the neck is warmer, lovely for rhythm work where chords sound full and rounded.
A great all round guitar, well built with good finishes, excellent pickups and hardware. A joy to play every day and plenty versatile enough to suit all musical styles.
